Baby wipes sold nationwide at a popular retailer are being recalled due to some potentially serious reactions to the products.
Up & Up Fragrance-Free and Up & Up Fresh Cucumber Scented Baby Wipes were pulled off shelves following customer complaints and U.S. Food and Drug Administration testing that identified traces of bacteria in the products, according to a June 5 notice from the FDA.
Target stores and Turkish manufacturer Sapro Temizlik Urunleri received reports from customers alleging that symptoms like skin irritation, eye irritation, and infections had occurred following the use of the recalled baby wipes. Customers also flagged product discoloration.
“Use of products contaminated with Burkholderia cepacia complex and Burkholderia gladioi may result in serious and life-threatening infections,” the notice reads. “The products are predominantly used on newborns, infants, and young children, who are particularly vulnerable to opportunistic infection due to their immature immune systems.”
The use of the recalled product on immunocompromised individuals, including infants and young children, can potentially lead to life-threatening sepsis or pneumonia, as potential infection is more likely to spread into the bloodstream.
Sepsis is a life-threatening immune response to an infection that has entered your bloodstream.
Early sepsis signs can resemble other conditions, complicating early identification. Contact your healthcare provider if an infection doesn’t improve with treatment or if you suddenly develop a fever or new symptoms. Sepsis can worsen rapidly and become life-threatening.
The Sepsis Alliance suggests using the acronym TIME to remember early symptoms in adults:
When you are sick with an infection, it can be hard to tell if you are starting to feel worse. Generally, people who develop sepsis will start feeling more tired or confused and may have shaking or chills.
Others may not know they have an infection but should note symptoms if they’ve been exposed to someone who is ill or has recently had surgery, an invasive medical procedure, or a wound that breaks the skin.
Chest pain is one of the most common symptoms. You may experience sharp or stabbing pains, which can happen when you’re breathing or coughing.
Chills may be a sign of pneumonia. If they also cause you to shake, this is known as rigors. Walking pneumonia, which feels like a bad cold, may only cause mild chills.
You can have a dry cough or a phlegmy one with pneumonia.
Bacterial pneumonia may present with a mucus-like cough with blood. Viral pneumonia is likely to cause phlegm that is watery or comes with pus.
People with pneumonia can develop a fever.
If you have pneumonia, you may have difficulty breathing. Some people require supplemental oxygen or treatments to help them breathe.
When your body tries to get rid of an infection like pneumonia, you can have excessive sweating or clammy skin.
Similar to adults, pneumonia in children may include fever, chills, or labored breathing. Signs of breathing problems for babies specifically include:
Additionally, look out for symptoms like:
